Tombstone Tuesday – Lewis F. Kirkpatrick (1863-1934)

Lewis F. Kirkpatrick, my 3rd great grand uncle, was born 2/15/1863 in Cherokee County, Texas. He died in Jacksonville, Texas of leg gangrene on 12/29/1934 at the age of 71. “L.F.” is the son of my 2nd great grandparents, James Isaac Kirkpatrick and Martha Margaret Fulton. He was a farmer in Cherokee County and married Mary Gay around the year 1900. I’m always intrigued by headstones with a picture of the deceased on them. This is invaluable to a genealogist, as it may be the only photo we come across. L.F. is buried in Union Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville, Texas.

I am researching my husband’s family (Kirkpatrick). Some of his grandfather’s siblings and other Kirkpatricks in the 1800s appear to have moved to Cherokee Co, TX from Alabama and Georgia. Just wondering if you have any connection to a John W. (or John Williams) Kirkpatrick, born in SC in 1815, lived in Newton Co, GA. Some of his children later lived in Alabama and some in Texas.

Pam – I have hit a dead end on the Kirkpatrick side. The last Kirkpatrick I have been able to trace my line back to is James Isaac Kirkpatrick (1827-1912). I believe that he was born in Tennessee and moved to Cherokee County before his marriage in 1849. It is possible that he is related to John Williams Kirkpatrick, but I have not found any info on him. Thank you so much for visiting my blog! Talk to you soon. Brian

Hi Pam, I understand how difficult it is to research the Kirkpatrick line. I have been at it a while and then stopped due to hitting the wall. John Williams is my great-great grandfather on my mothers side. My mother was Wonnie Bell Moss. Her mother was Effie Lou Kirkpatrick. Her father was John S. Kirkpatrick who married a Josephine Mayfield. His father was John Williams Kirkpatrick who married Lydia Hall in Dec. 16, 1837 in Elbert, Georgia. I have hit a wall on both sides. Josephine Mayfield was cherokee indian and that is difficult to research. The family is not willing to help in this and I haven’t found any one researching it either. What information do you have? I will be happy to send you what I have if you don’t have it already. Hope to hear from you. Sandy
